RTAF vows to carry on rain-making effort on the occasion of Father of Royal Rain Day

BANGKOK: -- The Royal Thai Air Force on Monday held a ceremony at the 6th air wing of Don Muang military airport to honour the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the occasion of the Father of the Royal Rain Day.

The RTAF commander-in-chief Air Chief Marshal Chom Rungsawang said that on November 14, 1955, then His Majesty the King was visiting villagers in the Northeast and he noticed that the region was arid and with scarce water.

The King, he said, thought how scientific method could be adapted to force rain to fall in the Northeast. The occasion marked the beginning of 40-plus years of Royally-initiated artificial rain making project that the RTAF has since played an active role to realize the project, he added.

The RTAF commander recalled that, during the rain-making season, the King closely followed up the progress of the effort every day and gave recommendations to the officials because he was concerned with the well-being of the northeastern people.

To honour the late King for his dedication to rain-making efforts, ACM Chom vowed that the RTAF would carry on with the late monarch’s initiative and would further develop the technique used to seed clouds, including research and development in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.

The RTAF participated in the cloud-seeding effort with the Agriculture Ministry back in 1972 when the country experienced widespread drought. Two RTAF aircraft, one C47 and one C130, were deployed in rain-making operations.

I wonder, how many Thai people are aware of where this "rain making" technology was discovered/developed. And, of those who do know, how many are just plain scared to say.

Wickipedia is your friend when it comes to Cloud Seeding
