Ministry of Commerce keeping an eye on Donald Trumps moves to do with the TPP

BANGKOK, 16 November 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Commerce has let on it is keeping an eye on US President-elect Donald Trump’s next moves concerning the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade pact initiated by current President Barack Obama.

The TPP was to be the largest ever free trade agreement in the world, bringing together the 12 countries of Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the US and Vietnam. Thailand does not currently have plans to sign on to the pact.

The Ministry of Commerce nonetheless, does not believe that disinterest by the Trump administration will sink the agreement as its remaining members may seek to forge onward. A part of the TPP stipulates that as few as 6 of the partnership’s signatories, as long as they comprise at least 85 percent of the GDP targeted by the pact, can put it into effect.

Currently, the US makes up 60 percent of the GDP in the TPP, but Donald Trump made clear in his campaign for the presidency he has no intention of following through with the agreement.

Regardless, the Ministry of Commerce pointed out Thailand already has deals with all of the nations signed on to the TPP and is already benefiting from the ASEAN Economic Community. The country is seeking to further bypass the need for the TPP by securing deals with 6 more countries, which include China, India, Japan and New Zealand.

Hope they are correct, the TPP is just more American workers being sold out to further some political/military agenda.

Sadly your a voice crying in the wilderness. Maybe we the retired should wear some symbol of grief  for the poor downtrodden workers who will sacrifice the job, family and future so some mega company can be enriched due to an open door policy of cheap labor (I quote this from Modi during his talks in Japan. To bad he is not another Gandhi but just another scoundrel politician dressed up fit to kill) Lax pollution laws New Delhi is being compared to the pollution created by the Nazi ovens. Yes folks the circle of control is ever tightening

Prayut never had an interest in joining TPP in spite the recommendations of his cabinet and businesses. He may view TPP as an economic competitor to China's Silk Road Hegemony and Prayut doesn't want to get on the wrong political side of China.

Sadly all the benefits of working will gradually diminish towards the lowest earning countries involved while the lowest  earning counties will see some benefit.

Dont bother wasting your time, Thailand. Singapore has already given up on this

Clueless. Doesn't these Trump comment meant anything to him?

"TPP pushed by special interest groups who want to rape our country"

"It is a horrible trade agreement. You have 12 countries all of whom want to rip our heart away".

Wasting his time keeping an eye on a non starter.

He wants to show that he is doing something, but keeping your eye on something which is not going to happen does not require a lot of work.
