Winners of Prince Mahidol Awards 2016 unveiled

BANGKOK, 17 November 2016 (NNT) – The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under the Royal Patronage has announced this year’s winners in the fields of medicine and public health.

Prof Dr Prasit Watanapa, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital and Vice Chairman of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, made known that winners have already been chosen for the Prince Mahidol Awards 2016.

The awardee in the field of medicine is biochemist Sir Gregory Paul Winter, Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, United Kingdom. Sir Winter pioneered the development of monoclonal antibody therapy, which has proven essential for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancer.

Meanwhile, Dr Vladimir Hachinski, a clinical neuroscientist and a distinguished professor at Western University in Canada, was declared the winner in the field of public health. His research on stroke and vascular dementia has saved many lives and reduced the risk of such illnesses for millions of people worldwide.

The Prince Mahidol Award was established by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej in honor of his father, Prince Mahidol of Songkhla. The award is given out annually to two recipients, whose works are beneficial to the medical and public health sectors. Each winner is presented with a medal, a certificate and a cash prize of 100,000 US dollars.
