Official Optimism On Tourism Tempered By The Numbers

Visitors weave baskets to be floated in the Chao Phraya River on Monday at Santi Chai Prakan Park in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — “Life goes on” was the key message Thailand’s top tourism official conveyed Wednesday night at a public forum on how the country’s tourism is weathering the death of its longest-reigning monarch.

Playing down the impact of His Majesty the Late King’s death on one of the kingdom’s biggest money-makers, Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul recounted her visit to a luxury hotel bar where she saw scenes of leisure returning to normal a month after the government declared a ban on public entertainment, forcing the once free-wheeling capital to go quiet.

Just what is this woman on ?

She needs to market it and then happiness will really be returned to the people as everyone can join her in La la Land where everything is already perfect and still getting better.

I want some of the juice she is on.

As  Nong Kai Kid says she is in la-la land.

Grim Numbers
A bleak counterpoint to Kobkarn’s exuberant assertions are the numbers coming in from the tourism sector.

Once again those damn facts get in the way of her wild assertions

Truth shall not be used to dispel government myths or to suggest that ministers herald from another planet

Scenes of leisure returning to normal. 555 Sure, no live bands, closures at midnight. Definitely normal... 555

What are you talking about? There are live bands playing again.

numbers and facts have a nasty habit of intruding on optimism.

I have never heralded that they come from another planet... I may have mumbled it a few times, posted pictures on the "Aliens live among us!" websites but that's all. Honest!

I came in through swampy a week back, 10.00am'ish on a Tuesday and there were huge ques at immigration, but that was due to there only being 2 guys on duty. The airport was pretty empty apart from people offering me taxis, mobile phones, the usual. Compared to the normal scarcely controlled chaos of a year or two back it was really quiet.

She is still "confident" that she will reach her target of 32.6 million tourists this year, despite the admitted drop from China. Will that confidence have evaporated by year-end or will the "statistics" prove her right once again?  There is not much talk about the money being generated from these tourists nowadays, is there?

Wow, I have just read that she has upped her target for 2016 by 300,000, followed by a projected income-generated number.  I bet Microsoft wishes they had a woman of her ability and calibre (and unbridled optimism) in their organisation!  Just imagine how successful they could be.

Normally, of course, Forecasters are held to account when their figures prove to be wildly optimistic and often lose their jobs as a result, but in this case there is no problem because both the forecasts and  supposed "actuals" are generated by her.

I believe a recent thread contradicting official numbers was removed, maybe this one will go the same way?

Yep, everything back to "normal" except fireworks on NYE and some other things...

One thing for sure- the slogan she keeps using is insensitive and considered rude .  I am quite surprised she hasn't been told to scrap it.
