Deadly Nepal Floods Leave 291 Foreigners Missing

At least three American tourists are reported among a preliminary toll of 384 people missing after serious flash flooding in Nepal, the Nepal Tourism Board said.

The flooding struck the northern Rasuwa district, near the border with Tibet, at around 8.30am local time on Wednesday, authorities said.

Preliminary Missing Figures

In a statement posted on X, the tourism board said the preliminary count includes 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals.

Among the foreign nationals listed as missing were tourists from India, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, South Africa, the Netherlands and Australia, the statement added.

The tourism board said local tourism and law enforcement authorities were working to verify the whereabouts and safety status of tourists and travellers who were in, or travelling through, the affected areas.

Americans With Fishtail Tours

The board said the three Americans were travelling with a Nepali company called Fishtail Tours and Travel.

The agency confirmed to ABC News that three American nationals are among the missing tourists travelling with it. The company said efforts to locate and rescue those people are ongoing, but did not provide additional details about their possible whereabouts or wellbeing.

A separate update from the US Embassy in Kathmandu said it was “deeply saddened” by the deaths and devastation caused by the flooding. The embassy added that it was tracking developments and in close contact with Nepali authorities.

The mission also urged Americans to avoid the affected areas and said it was working “to account for U.S. citizens who may have been affected.”

Rescue Operations Continue

Rescue work for people affected by the floods continued, with aircraft used as part of the response, according to the Nepali Army. In a post on X on Wednesday, the army urged people to remain highly vigilant and stay in safe places.

The floods were also reported to have caused casualties on the Chinese side of the border at the Gyirong border crossing, according to Xinhua News Agency, citing local information.

Xinhua said President Xi Jinping ordered search and rescue efforts for those reported missing.
