Authorities to ensure orderliness around Grand Palace this weekend

Surapan Laotharanarit

BANGKOK, 18 November 2016 (NNT) – The government is preparing measures to accommodate an expected influx of mourners around the Grand Palace this weekend.

After attending a meeting of the Commanding Center for Situation Monitoring, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Suwapan Tanyuwattana disclosed that the discussion was aimed to follow up on the maintenance of public order around the Grand Palace after public members were allowed to pay respects to the body of the late King.

As a large number of mourners are expected to come out this weekend, Mr Suwapan said traffic closures will be imposed only on eight roads surrounding Sanam Luang, similarly to weekdays. Those bringing personal vehicles will be asked to kindly park in the provided spaces on the perimeter of the site. All public transport services, including buses and boats, will be available as usual.

Regarding the arrangement of civil servants’ visits to the Grand Palace, the minister said six rounds are reserved for them on a daily basis, with each round open to a maximum of one hundred persons. He explained that such arrangement for civil servants is in accordance with official procedures and is not meant to give them privilege over others who would have to wait in line.

As for the online queuing system developed by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, Mr Suwapan revealed that the system is nearing completion and will be discussed further next week before its trial run.
