Crackdown Hits Chinese 149 Workers

Featured Replies

Immigration police extended their visa raids yesterday to a construction site in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Mon district where 149 Chinese nationals were found without work permits, passports or proper documentation, an official said. In April 2014, the Interior Ministry and Labor Ministry formed a joint inspection committee to keep an eye on companies employing foreigners and to take a more active role in enforcing the 1997 Labor Law as well as the immigration laws.

These laws require all migrant workers in the Kingdom to hold a work permit along with the appropriate business visa. If found to be employed without a permit, they must pay $100 to apply for one and be fined $125.    “We inspected and checked the proper documents of those Chinese nationals at their construction site and we found that 268 of the 278 Chinese nationals have business visas in their passports,” Interior Ministry chief inspector Major General Uk Heisela said.

“However, 139 don’t have work permit licenses from the Labor Ministry, while the other 10 have no passports or proper documentation to stay or work in the Kingdom,” Maj. Gen. Heisela said. He added that the arrests at a site operated by China Construction Fourth Engineering Division Corp were carried out in line with immigration laws. Maj. Gen. Heisela said: “The 139 people will be fined for lacking work permits and for the 10 Chinese who don’t have passports, they will be deported and permanently barred from returning to Cambodia.”
