how to visa run with a baby holding no passport yet

Featured Replies

So I entered the country on a visa exemption stamp end of June, then got a medical visa plus an extension, valid until 12 December. This was to cover my daughter's birth and should have allowed sufficient time to get her passport. Only, as there have been mistakes and delays in almost each step of the process starting with the birth certificate, I know for sure I will never have her passport on time for my visa run.

Has anybody had a similar situation? Is there any chance to get some kind of temporary visa if I go to immigration and explain the situation? Is going for a land visa exemption stamp (having the baby stay with a friend on the Thai side in the meanwhile) realistic - ie. how long does it take, which is the best border to do it, is this exemption stamp extendable like visas?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

You daughter will not be able to leave the country without a passport.

She is allowed to stay in the country since she was born here until after she leaves the country the first time.

You should not have a problem doing a out/in for a visa exempt entry at most border crossings. You will only get a 15 day entry unless your are from a G7 country that would allow a 30 day entry.

Which border crossing you go to will depend upon where you are located. If in Bangkok the border with Cambodia is the closest one but I suggest you avoid the Poi Pet crossing.

You can apply for a 30 day extension of a visa exempt entry at an immigration office.

When my son was born (in Thailand), my girlfriend was able to take him back to Laos via the Chong Mek land border, with just his birth certificate, when he was 4 weeks old.  She did the same again when he was about 15 months, although she was told that this would be the last time and next time he would need his passport.  Of course, this may be a different situation as my girlfriend is Laotian and they no doubt assumed the baby was too (although actually he's British!).

Ubonjoe - thanks a lot for your insight, much appreciated (and giving me hope!). would you happen to know how long it will take me to go out and then back in with the stamp - does it take several hours or can i hope to have it done under 1 hour all in all (baby s breastfed exclusively)? and yes, we are staying in bkk - do you have any specific crossing to recommend?

Brewsterbudgen - thanks for sharing your experience! i might not take the risk though, as even though my daughter has indonesian blood, she doesn t really look that asian :))

I suggest you go to the Ban Laem crossing. It is little further from Bangkok than Poi Pet but is less busy.

You should be able to do the crossing in an hour.

This company does border runs to Ban Laem. http://www.thaivisaservice.com/

Thank you so much, ubonjoe!

ThaivIsaservice is a good service to use, normally around 30-45 minutes turnaround time at the border and arrive back in BKK around 3 30
