Thai Hom Mali Rice wins 2016 World’s Best Rice title

DURHAM, 30th November 2016 (NNT) – Thai Hom Mali Rice has won the title of 2016 World’s Best Rice in a global contest held by the Rice Trader; it was followed by rice from Cambodia and the US.

The Hom Mali jasmine rice from Thailand, regained the title of World’s Best Rice 2016, in blind tests by cooking experts in a global rice contest held by an American organization “The Rice Trader.”

Thailand’s Hom Mali rice held this title for two years from 2009, but the lost it to Myanmar’s Pawsan rice in 2011. Pawsan, or Myanmar Pearl rice, has a thick and round grain which can expand by 3-4 times when cooked, and can retain its distinctive fragrance.

Phaka Malis rice of Cambodia won the title in 2012. The word Phaka Malis means rice of jasmine. The Cambodian rice has many characteristics similar to Thai Hom Mali Rice due to the low use of chemical fertilizers.

In 2013, Cambodia’s Phaka Malis rice had the same score as California Rose rice from California, the USA, resulting in two kinds of rice sharing the winner’s spot. California Rose or Calrose rice has medium-sized grains which look like budding roses. The rice is also called “Blue Rose” when cultivated in Louisiana. Calrose is widely cultivated in Australia and the Pacific Islands. Its glutinous character makes it suitable for sushi making.

In 2014, Cambodia’s other kind of rice called “Phka Romdul” and Thailand’s brown Hom Mali rice won the title. Then the US California Rose rice then won the title the next year.

On 18th November 2016 in Chiang Mai, Thai Hom Mali Rice regained the winner's title, followed by the fragrant rice of Cambodia, and Japonica rice from the US.

Problem is that the rice used for this competition was from 2016 harvest. And what countries will buy is 2013 harvest.

The price of Thai Hom Mali Rice will be up tomorrow...
