How early can I renew a non-immigrant O visa?/Change renewal dates?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I hold a non-immigrant O visa (3 million+ Baht investment visa). I am currently not based in Thailand but travel there yearly to renew it, in order to not losing it. The expiry date is the 6th of May. My questions are, what date would be the earliest for me to renew my visa for another year? Also, for the future, would it possible move the date for the renewal back, i.e. from May to January? Basically loose 3-4 months from this year but making it more convinient for the future.

/M

30 days early, some offices 45 days, not possible to move date. but if your passport was expiring in less than a year from extension date , they would date the extension to the expiry date of the passport

Are you talking about an extension of stay based on investment? Visas are never renewed. I thought extensions based on investment were only considered for investments over Baht 10,000,000.

Extension renewal dates can't be changed.  Even if you do the renewal a month or so before the current extension expires, the new extension will be added on from the date the current one expires. I assume you also get a re-entry permit each year?

As Steve said, the only exception would be if your passport expired in less than a year in which case the extension would only be granted to the date the passport expires.

He is grandfathered for the 3 million baht investment extension that was possible prior to 2006.

OK. I learn something new every day

If you are not in Thailand, I would recommend asking this question at a Thai Consulate where you are located. Only Thai agencies or perhaps a Thai Immigration attorney should be relied upon to give correct information.

Actually, the correct answers have already been given here. Impossible to change the renewal date except for the passport expiration thing. Most people would not want to change using the passport expiration because it would mean going through the bother of applying for a one year extension and getting less than a year.

The other extreme way to change the date is to START OVER with a new O visa, strategically timed, but in the case of the O.P.'s type of extension ... not a viable choice.

Total waste of time and/or money to follow your suggestions in this case.

The OP asks a question we've seen many times before here and always the same answer. Can't change the renewal date.

That said, it might be a good CASH COW for immigration to offer that option for a large fee. At present, not offered.

I agree they are most likely good answers, But there is an old saying, Jailhouse lawyers advice sounds reasonable, however, if their experience was so great why were they in jail? My experience is Blogs may give great experiences & information based on that persons own experiences, but for an official answer, go to a legally qualified source.

Your cliches are irrelevant to this topic.
AGAIN -- the O.P. has absolutely received correct information here. Waste of time and money to go elsewhere.

Another falsehood you are promoting is that Thai consulates and embassies abroad are knowledgeable about processes at immigration offices in Thailand. For the most part, they are not. Much better to ask here of people with years of experience of what actually happens IN THAILAND.

Yes there is sometimes false information given on Thaivisa but rest assured as long as we have the grand Poobah VISA GURU posting here, Ubonjoe, any such misinformation will be cleared up when it is possible to do so.

There are some grey areas of course. Such as with the proposed new 5-10 year "Long Stay" visa. As it doesn't exist yet, it's impossible to advise about it.

Bob, maybe you should try the Thai Consulate in Sydney.

The OP has an extension of stay done by immigration. A consulate would be of no help.

I trust ubonjoe's  advice more than I trust any consulate. He has been helping others with immigration issues before I ever thought of coming to Thailand. He has a nice but firm way of explaining what he knows and what he guesses.  Thank you  ubonjoe.

If your wife is Thai you should be able to get at least a single entry non-o visa based upon marriage instead of a tourist visa. The non-o visa would allow a 90 day entry.

Then if you can show 400k baht in a Thai bank for 2 months or proof of 40k baht income you could apply for a one year extension of stay based upon marriage during the last 30 day of the 90 day entry.
