Ronaldo and Mourinho defend tax arrangements

Two of the top names in football, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, have strenuously denied suggestions based on leaked documents that their financial arrangements may have amounted to tax evasion.

A group of 12 European newspapers say over the next few weeks they intend to disclose the results of investigations into widespread alleged corruption at the heart of football under the banner “Football Leaks”.

Friday’s first publications focus on the activities of the agent for both Portuguese stars, Jorge Mendes.

The consortium, European Investigative Collaborations, claims the Real Madrid player could have hidden money in tax havens in Switzerland and the British Virgin Islands, effectively paying only four percent tax.

The Manchester United manager is said to have concealed a lesser amount in a Swiss bank account owned by a British Virgin Islands company.

Denying the accusations, the agent’s company Gestifute insists both stars have fully respected their obligations regarding Spanish and British authorities, saying neither are implicated in any judicial procedures.
