Sokha’s Pardon: ‘No Conditions’

Featured Replies

Freshly pardoned CNRP deputy leader Kem Sokha yesterday claimed the pardon that exonerated him on Friday was made without any conditions or concessions from the opposition party. The acting president of the opposition, who had been under de facto house arrest since May and had been sentenced to five months in prison in November for failing to appear in court as a witness, said he was ready to continue working with the ruling CPP and would not stop his struggle to find solutions for the party activists and human rights officials still in prison.

Mr. Sokha was pardoned on Friday by King Norodom Sihamoni after a request from Prime Minister Hun Sen. It was a stunning turn of events considering the harsh comments previously made by some members of the ruling party about the court cases involving Mr. Sokha and opposition leader Sam Rainsy.

During a meeting with party leaders and youth representatives from Kampong Cham and Tbong Khmum province at party headquarters in Phnom Penh yesterday, Mr. Sokha said the pardon represented the shared ideals he and Mr. Hun Sen have about national unity. He added that his freedom was considered a solution to a political situation that has drawn the ire, and tough criticism, from a variety of international actors, including the United Nations, European Union and United States.
