Tsunami threat lifted after magnitude 7.8 quake hits off Solomon islands

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit off the Solomon Islands, the US Geological Survey said. It was initially reported as magnitude 8.0.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has initially said that hazardous tsunami waves were possible within three hours “along some coasts of Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, New Caledonia, Tuvalu and Kosrae.” But the threat was later lifted.

The center also issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii, which was later lifted.

It came hours after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California. Both occurred in the Pacific basin’s ‘Ring of Fire’ where around 90% of the world’s earthquakes occur.

It is good news to hear  that  there  was no big wave  this time.

I hope there was not too much  damage  to  people on those

islands near  such  a big  earthquake.
