Loei to Laos border crossing

Featured Replies

Hello, I am looking to go to Vientianne with my thai wife and child.  My questions are:

1. Can I cross via Loei?

2. Can I pay for my Laos visa in US dollars at this point?

3. Can my thai child get a border pass at this checkpoint? (My wife has a passport).

4. How far is it to Vientianne from here?

Thx for any advice.

1. There is a crossing in Loei. Map: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ban+Na+Kra+Seng+Border/@17.6912786,101.3929654,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x9e72b12f04e36dbe!8m2!3d17.6912786!4d101.3951541

Not sure how you would get to Vientiane from there though.

2. Yes

3. I am certain a border pass can be obtained there for you child. But a border pass is only meant to be used within the area near the crossing used.

4. Google map says 5 hours on route shown within Laos. Two are shown traveling within Thailand that shows 4.5 hours.

I think your best option is travel to Nong Khai and cross to Vientiane there.

Is there a 2 or 3 day limit on a border pass?

Three days. I think they cout them as as 72 hours.

A Border Pass can be extended by Lao Immigration for perhaps one day, but awkward to do by yourself.  The one time my wife did it, the hotel in Vientiane handed it.

FYI, a portion of the road on to Vientiane is still unpaved.

Agree with UJ, go via Nong Khai better.
