BANGKOK: -- The CIMB Thai Bank launched the opening of its first “kiosk” bank office in 7-Eleven convenience store – the first of its kind in Thailand.

Mr Adisorn Sermchaiwong, vice president of retail business of CIMB Thai Bank, said Thursday that the kiosk-sized bank is staffed with just one person and will provide a wide range of services such as opening savings bank account without a bank book (e-savings), accepting cash deposit for savings or current account of not exceeding 30,000 baht, foreign exchange service for all currencies not exceeding 30,000 baht in value and international money transfer not exceeding 30,000 baht.

He said that the “kiosk” bank would also provide personal credit service approval with the need of just one ID card.

Whether the unconventional banking service would be expanded to other areas or not will depend on public response to this “kiosk” bank at Seetabut branch, said Mr Adisorn, adding that CIMB Thai Bank has been striving to provide speedy, simple and convenient services to customers in financial transactions as part of the bank’s strategy to advance to digital banking business.

You can do anything in a Thai 7 Eleven, shop, buy booze, do your banking and you can even report a rape or assaults to the register chick.

There are no true convenience stores in Thailand.

An actual "convenience store" has a washroom for your, er, convenience

Was in their bank the other day 1 customer only. Went to the K bank had to wait 20 minutes for service. The TMB could make their interest rates more competitive would maybe draw in more customers. The rates are all over the place here with banks I often feel like I am playing roulette moving money from one bank to another to capture the best rates.

Rates are too, low, agreed.

But the only way to make money is by smart investments. 2-3 % just cover inflation.

And I don't have the answer, on investments.

Me neither. 2-3% today is a rare bird indeed. We worked hard all our lives and now are being milked. What a travesty.

Convenient for robbers, they can do a 7-11 and a bank at the same time.

You better not be a robber that needs to use the bathroom in a hurry.
