Thailand's custom of 'fictive Kin' seen as impairing labour rights

BANGKOK: -- MIGRANT domestic workers in Thailand need to be formally recognised as employees with legislation to protect their rights, the president of a foreign workers group has said.

Champadolma Lama, president of the Network of Migrant Domestic Workers in Thailand, said some foreign workers might get comfort from being seen as “part of the family”, but that type of relationship can severely undermine their labour rights and social protection as workers.

A recent survey found that foreign domestic workers worked excessive hours, averaging 11.89 hours a day.

In typical fashion we do not see the work "all" workers included in the headline. Hence all of the uproar by international organizations regarding slavery, trafficking of persons, etc, etc, etc of immigrants. Not to mention the constant extortion and ill treatment of same by the police. For instance in Kho Pangnan.

Just goes to show that even if the job is reserved for Thais only, they can and are subjected to slavery like abuses.

At the end of the day it is all about the "haves vs the have nots".

IMHO - I can honestly say that after having come here for the past 41 years and now living here for the past ten full time I am ready to move on.  And it's not from just the above, but all of the ever present anti farang sentiment, even the growing Thai vs Thai crime and abuse, the constant denial and lack of responsibility and accountability by most of the local population, etc. I fully expect many to add that they will help me pack my bags, but we really need to weight the pluses vs minuses of living here. I even look around at the dwindling number of expat friends I have and the future does not bode well for staying. No need to do another survey regarding this. Just honestly look around and discuss with family and friends.

I could cite the many recent personal examples of this I have noticed or been subjected to but it's already embedded here in the voluminous pages and text of TV.
