Woman goes online and speaks of failed suicide jump from Rama 8 bridge

BANGKOK: -- A woman has gone online to tell the story of how she tried to commit suicide by jumping off the Rama 8 bridge into the Chao Praya River.

 

The woman - who posted her story on the Panthip website - claimed that she jumped but was saved from the water by rescuers with flotation devices and was loaded onto a boat, reports Daily News.

 

Posting under membership number 1405281 the woman said that last week she had split up with her boyfriend. She said she wrote a suicide note for her mum and dad and headed to the bridge where she waited until no one was about.

 

But when she was about to jump she looked at the reflections in the water below and thought of the harm she was doing to her parents. She pited her mum and dad so she went home.

 

But next day she had a stronger resolve. She said she went to the bridge again and it was all quiet there with no passersby.

 

She jumped but did not die. She tried to force herself to drown in the water but someone came to her rescue with a flotation ring. A boat came to pluck her from the water.

 

She said that she was surrounded by police, rescue workers, traders and locals near the bridge.

 

She realized she was loved.

 

She told people online that committing suicide is not the answer to solving problems. It creates more problems and causes grief and trouble for those left behind.

 

Netizens who read her story offered their encouragement and support to the woman.

 

The award winning Rama 8 bridge was one of the largest bridges of its kind in the world on its completion in 2002. The top of the pylon that supports it is at 160 meters though the distance from the water to the road is considerably less.

That was the just the trigger which led to the depressive episode which led to the suicide attempt.

 

Research shows that the underlying common drivers tend to be genetic susceptibility to depression and traumatic events and experiences in developmental years.

 

These in turn lead to actual depressive episodes, use of alcohol and drugs, withdrawal from friends and family and a lack of self-worth.

 

This may, "on a bad day" result in a suicide attempt.

Growing up can be tough.  All those hormones racing through the bloodstream, along with deep-set attachments to concepts of boyfriend/girlfriend and all the crap that goes with it.   Maybe she can also tell Thai girls not to get so attached to boys.  It's tough row to hoe.  Kinda like telling a beaver not to swim.
