NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: -- Foundation workers in Nakorn Sri Thammarat saved a policeman from certain death after his pick-up got submerged in flood waters in a creek.

Rescuers from the Pracha Ruam Jai foundation rushed to the Huay Peuk creek in Phromsiri district last night after a radio message was received. A D-Max Isuzu had been washed away into the creek some 400 meters and there was a man unconscious and trapped inside, reports Daily News.

They decided to smash the window with a hammer and haul out Kla Punpong, 50, who is attached to the Phromsiri station police.

His pulse had stopped and he was given CPR for a full ten minutes before his heart started beating again. He was taken to hospital and is now recovering.

Daily News said it was a miracle that he had been saved.

The pick up was later retrieved from the creek at around 3.30am.

Police said that their colleague had tried to outrun flood waters in heavy rain and got into trouble. His pick-up was literally washed away in the torrent.

10 minutes and no heart beat? If correct, the man can be expect to have brain damage.

Possibly. But also possible that the CPR was performed effectively enough that oxygenated blood was still flowing to the brain.  Let's hope for the best as we are talking about a human life (and possibly a primary breadwinner if he's got a family)

The "miracle" here is that there was anyone there (more than one?) who even knew how to do CPR and that they stayed with it for as long as they did.   If done correctly it is not uncommon to pull people back after twice that time or even longer.  For longer periods then AR would also needed to be thrown in the mix to keep some O2 going through the body.

I asked a group of caddies once - who deal with older people everyday - if any of them knew how to do CPR.  Not a one did.  The would just call to the club house and wait for help to arrive.

Good job to those that gave aid.
