Certificate of Residency on tourist visa and no embassy

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am staying in Bangkok on tourist visas around 7-8 months every year and want to get a motorbike and a driver's license here. I am from Estonia (EU) and Estonia has no embassy in Thailand. From reading the topics here, I also understand that getting a residence certificate from Chaengwattana cannot be done on a tourist visa. Would it be possible to get the certificate from another country's embassy and would the Land Transport Office accept it? Or is there any other way around it to get the certificate. As I understand, I would need 3 certificates -- to get a driver's license, to buy a motorbike, and to open a bank account? If anyone has any advice, it would be great, otherwise I guess I should just go to Changwattana and beg them to issue 3 certificates. Thanks.

You do not need on to open a bank account.

If I would like to obtain a res cert from my embassy (Netherlands), they check whether you have officially "checked out" in the Netherlands.

Therefore I had to get a resume from the authorities in the Netherlands.

I think that the Land & Transport office (licenses and vehicle registration) only accept Thai res cert's.

There are several options:

- begging immigration to submit 3 res cert's ($$$$)

- next time you come to Thailand, obtain a O-A visa in your home country; you will probably get a 90-day single entry, but at least you will be able to apply for a res cert.

Actually there are are two Estonian honorary consulates where you should be able to get the certificate of residency. One in Bangkok and another in Phuket.

Thank you! Yes, I have heard about the honorary consul, but did not think he would be able to give out such documents. I will give it a try and see what he says about this.

If your EU-country doesn't have a representative in the country you are in you can use the embassy or consulate of any other EU-member state.

This is an official EU-rule.
