EU Does Not Take Sides: Official

Featured Replies

The European Union’s ambassador to Cambodia said the EU does not take the side of any political party in Cambodia, an official said yesterday. Chum Sounry, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke to reporters after a meeting between Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and EU Ambassador George Edgar at the Foreign Ministry.

He said Mr. Sokhonn and Mr. Edgar discussed the current political situation and the relationship between Cambodia and the EU. “During the meeting, Mr. Edgar said that the EU’s stance is not to take sides or support any political party in Cambodia at all,” Mr. Sounry said, adding that Mr. Edgar also said the EU did not support any activity that violated Cambodian laws.

Mr. Sokhonn told the EU ambassador that the current political situation in Cambodia was progressing smoothly, according to the spokesman. “During the meeting, His Excellency Prak Sokhonn explained how Kem Sokha, acting president of the Cambodia National Rescue Party, had been pardoned by King Norodom Sihamoni after he [Mr. Sokha] wrote an official letter to Samdech Hun Sen requesting the prime minister intervene on his behalf,” Mr. Sounry said.
