Police make preparations for heavy holiday traffic

BANGKOK, 28 December 2016 (NNT) – The Metropolitan Police Bureau continues to implement various measures to ensure safety for road users during the upcoming New Year’s holiday.

Pol Maj Gen Jirapat Poomjit, Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, disclosed that the agency has adopted another road safety program which is aimed at encouraging motorists to pay their overdue fines in order to retrieve their driver’s license from the police for use during the New Year Festival.

The new scheme applies to motorists who have been given a ticket with a fine of not exceeding 400 baht for minor offenses, such as failure to carry a driver’s license and not wearing a helmet. In exchange for their license, the offenders will be allowed to pay a reduced fine of only 100 baht.

According to Pol Maj Gen Jirapat, more homebound holidaymakers are expected to swarm Mo Chit Bus Terminal later this week, potentially causing severe traffic congestion on surrounding roads. Therefore, traffic police and police units responsible for the area have been tasked with facilitating the commuters.

In the meantime, 1,400 more traffic police officers are set to be deployed to areas around the Grand Palace on New Year’s Eve, when people will be arriving to join in a candlelight ceremony and overnight praying. As for the countdown event at Central World, Ratchaprasong intersection will be closed to all vehicles from midday of December 30 while revelers are urged to use public transport.

Please be nice to the police. They have a difficult job to do.

If you drive, please follow the rules of the road.

Do not drink and drive.

Safe Travels to all Farang.

I am pretty sure whatever they do will have little effect on what happens over the new year break.
