SETV -- from date of issuance, how many days to enter?

Featured Replies

I would like to apply for a single entry tourist visa in Phnom Penh.  I would like to know how many days I will have from the

date of issuance to enter Thailand.

if relevant, the following.  ( a lot of questions, VERY HAPPY with an answer just to the question above)

-I am Canadian

- I do not want to use the visa free entry at the border as I need to save them for possible emergency medical use for myself and my family

-I have not had a visa for a decade, and have had relatively few entries, all for short stays

-I have a retirement visa in Cambodia

-I would like to get the free visa which I believe is available until the end of February (or is it the end of January?) and will be using an agent as I am far away from Phnom Penh.  I am also far away from the closest agent, and in my experience not all the local ones are well informed .

-I would prefer not to buy a plane ticket out of Thailand, as I am not completely sure of the exit date.  Is there a way to buy a bus ticket online from Bangkok to aranyapathet/rongklua/poipet/siem reap or a train ticket from Bangkok to aranya to include with an application and satisfy the authorities.

-the Thai trip will be under a week.  If there were no visa issues I would probably visit Thailand ten times a year for a grand total of forty days.

thank you

A Setv is valid for 3 months from date of issuance and will give you 60 days permission to stay.

you say you are going to visit maybe 10 times a year, what type of visa are you going to use for all of those entries?

The visa is valid to do an entry for 3 months from the date of issue.

You would not have to show a ticket back to Cambodia to get the visa. It can be to anywhere. Perhaps a low cost flight from any airport to any  nearyby country.

Not sure about being able to buy a international bus ticket online.

Getting that many SETVs from the same embassy/consulate in one year might be a problem, although it's possible an agent could make it possible. Sounds like it could be expensive and time-consuming if you mean you would only be staying, on average, 4 days per visit.

You're only allowed 2 visa exempt entries per year by land border, but if you could manage to do a few visits flying into Thailand, there is (I believe) no limit on how often you arrive by air, although even then you might be questioned about your reason for entering so often. If it's for medical treatment, you might carry with you hospital receipts from prior visits to show immigrations.

If you're legally resident in Cambodia, you might ask about getting a METV. Not sure if that's possible.

As has been mentioned a SETV will get you are "permitted to stay" stamp on entry of 60 days.

You can extend that SETV in Rhailand at your local immigration for another 30 days for a fee of 1900 Baht.

That will give you a total of 90 days on each SETV.

The time you have to enter Thailand on a SETV is effectively 60 days from when you recieve it

But as I said you can extend that SETV in country at immigration for 30 days by paying that 1900 Baht extension fee.

However you need to understand a Single Entry Visa also has a Single exit.

So if you enter Thailand you will get a 60 day "permission to stay stamp" when you enter.

If you choose to leave 4 days later your exit from Thailand ends that SETV, and you can not renew that SETV because when you exit your SETV is automatically used up by that exit.

It doesn't matter if you stay only 4 days or 60 days, your SETV is only good for One  Entry and One associated exit.

That is why it is called a Single Entry Tourist Visa.

If you enter and get a 60 day permisssion to stay and you leave after only 4 days you do not have 56 days "left over" to use.

That is why your idea of getting 10  SETV in a year from the same Thai consulate will not work.

Most consulates will not issue more than 3 or 4 SETV in one year.

If you want, for example, 10 SETV in a year you will have to be prepared to travel around SouthEast Asia to different countries and getting maybe a max of 4 visas from each consulate.

It can be done, but all that travel and hotel time will be expensive.

In addition your SEtV may be stamped, as mine is, Employment Prohibited.

That means no working in Thailand, even as a Sales Rep.

Note that my Cambodian Thai-Visa agent allows me to show a bank statement worth over $1000 USD in lieu of an outgoing plane-ticket.

The Thai Consulate in Phnom Penh might also be more amenable to more than the usual number of Thai Tourist-Visas if you provide info showing you live in Cambodia, and that your visits are short - but inquire with the consulate on this question.  Usually, it is 3 Tourist Visas max, with the only "reset" option being the purchase of a new passport.

Also, if you wish to make 2 visits to Thailand within a 60-day window, you could enter on a new SETV, receive a "permission of stay" date 60 days out, then get a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand (1000 Baht) to preserve your original "permission of stay" date for use for a 2nd entry.   The 2nd visit and exit would need to occur during the 60-days you received from the 1st entry.

Fly In and get visa Exempt as I understand it there will be no restrictions as such with flying in.
