Are there any detailed maps for this area available?

Never sure if they're called large or small scale but the equivalent of the ones in Australia or the US that show all the smaller roads etc. Tried the local Police but their's is hand painted on the wall.

The tourist police have a fairly good map freely available.

The new free magazine Communi Thai has a copy of it in their December issue.

The TAT map is reasonable but rather 'limited'.

Much better is the B&B road map (Berndtson & Berndtson) of Thailand North (including city maps of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son). Even dirt roads are on it.

150 Baht in the 'better' bookshops.

A very nice map to frame and to hang on the wall in your study was (still is?) for sale at Duang Kamon. It is based on an old military map. It is however so extremely detailed that it is almost impossible for normal use. But it's a beauty!

Limbo :o

Not only Chiang Rai but the whole country is covered on this CD map available at DK books near the clock tower MapMagic [Thailand 2005-2006 ET]. It comes with a pretty useless paper map too. The CD is great and allows you to zoom in to a scale of 1:20,000 even showing dirt track roads. try it!!! Even the Search function works well in either English or Thai

Alternatively in the same shop there is a map (sorry its in the car and the wife's out) that I bought in the same shop which is very detailed

Try not to get lost. In Thailand it is said that the map is on your tongue.....just ask....someone will know especially the postman.

Cheers, AjarnP :D
