Border checkpoint with Laos to open

Featured Replies

A new international border checkpoint connecting Cambodia’s Stung Treng province with Laos’ Champasak province will be officially inaugurated next week, according to a Foreign Affairs Ministry statement yesterday. Opening the Trapeang Kriel-Nong Nokkhiane crossing is aimed at facilitating and boosting trade between the two countries.

“Both leaders, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Lao counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith, will preside over the inauguration ceremony of the international border checkpoint between Cambodia and Lao PDR to take place on January 10,” the statement read. After the ceremony, Mr. Hun Sen and government officials will visit the Don Sahong hydropower dam in Champasak province, the statement added.

A government official, who declined to be named, said the amount of trade between the two countries was not made public at the meeting, but total investment in Laos by Cambodia was valued at about $84 million.
