US military shipment arrives in Germany, ahead of NATO exercises

Hundreds of US tanks, trucks and other military equipment has arrived at the northern Germany port of Bremerhaven.

It’s marks a stop off before they move to Poland, the Baltics and Romania, as NATO seeks to reassure its eastern European members, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Major General Tim McGuire, Europe Deputy Commander, US Army commented to reporters that the deployment was part of Atlantic Resolve, which has been running for several years, and added that it should “serve to reassure our eastern European allies of the continued commitment of the United States of America…It’s just another sign of the United States’ and NATO’s commitment to deterrence, and maintaining the peace here in Europe.”

NATO countries say the planned military exercises are purely defensive. But Moscow has strongly condemned what it deems a Western buildup on European soil.

The members of NATO say the military presence is modest compared to the 330,000 troops it believes the Kremlin has set up along Russia’s western flank.

Since when have European countries been taking care of themselves?

Insulting and murdering each other under disguise of "war"

They're still at it, in spite of the so called EU.

This is about the US still wanting to police the world and your little spat with Putin. The sooner you get your weapons out of Europe and stop antagonising the bloke the better. No-one invited you and (despite this being "to serve to reassure our eastern European allies") I'm sure the German people would be the first to see the back of you lot in their country.

Well let's see what happens when the little spat with Putin turns into something bigger , like the Russian Army coming through the Fulda Gap, bet the Germans will be the first to pray for assistance

So pack back up and go home..... because not many countries will loose any sleep over it.  You might think you are part of the solution but in fact you are a big part of the problem too.  The only reason you want to be in Europe is so that you have the early warning for the US.

So please do whatever you must to get US troops out of Europe

Actually the OP deployment is a component of Operation Atlantic Resolve in response to the Russian sponsored invasion of the Dombass region. Note the Russian sponsored war in the Dombass area is claimed to have generated more 9,758 deaths, including 2,338 civilians, with an IDP population of around a million.

I really doubt EU governments desire the removal of US troops in this context. Again in context the US contributes approx US$500 million p.a. for direct spending in support of NATO EU operations. Given NATO countries have provided a fair amount of support for US overseas operations. I would guess it is difficult to clearly define contributing countries actual costs & benefits.

No one invited you? Really. What exactly is Nato if not a very big invitation to the USA?

Looks like an offensive play to me. During the first Cold War, the US focused on defending the Fulda Gap against a Soviet Attack. All US doctrine was based on that scenario. Turns out, it was enough. Now we are massing on the borders forgetting the success of the first Cold War. The numbers and locations look offensive to me.

This really has nothing to do with Europe taking care of itself, this is about Russia and the US and its allies.

But I agree with other posters, I dont think European countries want the US out, neither do I thin the US itself wants out of Europe.

Wouldn't the Germans pray for help as soon as Berlin was threatened?  Are you betting that the Poles won't bother to ask for help this time round?

And what is the connection with the military exercise in Germany?

How Craig loves to say it's scary. Anything 'bigger' with Russia means nukes and the end of Europe. And Fulda gap is so sixties. There no Russian tanks in Eastern Germany or Poland anymore.
The major confrontation in Europe is too dangerous, it's understood in Germany and France and you might lose your bet.
Off course, I can be wrong and you have a lot of combat experience and very deep understanding of the subject we are discussing here.

Why would the U.S. have to be in Europe as an early  warning system.  They don't even have to be in theater when using drones. The person flying the drone is sitting in the middle of the U.S. just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. From there, they can hit a terrorist driving in the desert in Afghanistan. You are watching too many  Cold War era films.

The only reason the US wants to be in Europe is to help maintain peace.  Remember the 2 world wars?  Devastating effects on the global economy.  With the US being one of the largest economies in the world, disruptions have a huge impact on the US economy.  And yes, it is about money.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aftermath_of_World_War_II#Economic_aftermath

Quote

By the end of the war, the European economy had collapsed with 70% of the industrial infrastructure destroyed.[108] The property damage in the Soviet Union consisted of complete or partial destruction of 1,710 cities and towns, 70,000 villages/hamlets, and 31,850 industrial establishments.

Place the blame properly.  Russia is becoming more and more aggressive.  Baltic states are nervous and asking for help, and others have already been invaded.  NATO won't cause any problems unless someone else does.

The Secretary General is responsible for coordinating the workings of the alliance, serves as the head of the North Atlantic Council, and leads NATO's staff. The current Secretary General is Jens Stoltenberg, the former Prime Minister of Norway .  The U.S. has the least to do with NATO.

Also, any country is free to leave NATO.
