Northern Ireland’s deputy first minister Martin McGuinness has resigned from office in protest over his power-sharing partner’s handling of a botched energy scheme.

The decision by the Sinn Fein leader all but guarantees snap elections in the province.

“Over this period of the elections, both the British government and the DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) in my opinion have grievously undermined the institutions and have eroded public confidence. So we in Sinn Fein will not tolerate the arrogance of Arlene Foster (First Minister of Northern Ireland) and the DUP,” McGuinness said.

McGuinness’ move came after the DUP’s First Minister Arlene Foster refused to step down over her role in a renewable heating scheme.

That’s estimated to have left Stormont with a 560 million euro overspend.

Sinn Fein has seven days to nominate McGuinness’ successor, but has already said it will not replace him.

A former terrorist, who admits it, and has the balls to admit that some very wrong and terrible things were done in the past, which in the context of the time were thought to be right.

He moved on and proved when working with Ian Paisley that enemies could reconcile and work together to attempt to build a better and peaceful future.

He made the most sensible comments after Brexit - not prone to the silly outbursts of Sturgeon, or shallow Westminster and Welsh assembly members.

I hate the IRA and all they did. But the line had to be drawn. It must be drawn equally so persecuting former service men is appalling.

But this decision is about what seems some very iffy business going on - a wee bit of corruption perchance?

say what you like guys but their will be more mourners at his funeral when he dies than their will be at yours

Maybe; and he will have a funeral when he dies; unlike many of the disappeared.

If McGuinness and Adams don't know where the as yet undiscovered bodies are, they know the people who do.

Why have they never obtained this information and passed it on to the families so they can give their loved ones a decent funeral?

im not defending this guy, but if the two of them admitted to anything then they would

have to answer for it.
