Residents of flood-hit Tambon Sathing Phra in Songkhla's Sathing Phra district wade through floodwater to get food and relief items from state agencies yesterday.

BANGKOK: -- THE UNITED States has donated Bt3.5 million to help flood victims in the South.

“On behalf of the American people, I offer my sincere condolences and sympathy to the people of Thailand for the loss of life and damage caused by the flooding in southern Thailand,” US Ambassador Glyn Davies said yesterday.

He handed the funds over to Save the Children (Thailand), which will use the money to bolster its relief efforts in the affected provinces.

Unseasonably heavy rains over the past weeks have led to severe flooding in more than 12 provinces in the South, causing more than 20 deaths and affecting over a million people.

The Thai Red Cross Society has also been seeking donations to help with its relief efforts in the South.

Not bad considering the country is under military rule, and the last few times aid has been offered, it's been refused.

Wonder how much of that will the flood victims see me think very little. TIT

why would the US give aid to Thailand? It's not like it is a third world country or anything....... Thailand does not need foreign interference. Thailand knows best.

Good on you USA !!!

And the aid from China is? Mmmm..........

I am not a U.S. citizen but all I can say is, good on you Yankees!

China rarely gives money to help it's neighbours. Also when the phillipines got struck by that huge hurricane they didn't care to help them.

My wife also wanted to donate, i asked her what did you get after we got hit by the flooding in our house? She decided to not do it.

It reminds me of the german rescueteam which was sent home after they arrived here 24hrs after the tsunami struck. They didn't have a workpermit and had to leave.

Some volunteers were actually arrested and escorted out of the country.

Can you believe that?

They got one of the best rescueteams of the world here to help them after a huge disaster and all they could care about was them not having a workpermit.....

Those rescueworkers were here in Thailand within 24 hrs, the flight from Germany takes about 12 hours...So after they heard the news they immediatly jumped in their cars, packed their goods, kissed their wives goodbye to help the Thai and than they even got arrested for not having a workpermit...For sure they wouldn't have accepted any money for their help, they do it all for free.

Thais can be very xenophobic.  Especially if there's money in it....LOL

Really?  There are many muppets who post on this forum who insist it is a third world country, but then, they've never been to one in the first place.

It'll get them a rubber ring each.

On the flipside, where do you figure they'd stay in an area where all the accommodations had been destroyed?  Whose food were they going to be fed because it was impossible to get shipments in?   Had they registered their intentions and credentials with the government, or just shown up completely anonymous?  How many "volunteers" were actually opportunists looking to scavenge valuables they could steal in the confusion?  How many volunteers had to be rescued themselves when they over estimated their own abilities, and underestimated the situation?

All they had to do was register with the government and show something like $6,000 of registered capital for their organization to be legal to get volunteer work permits.  Otherwise, the Thai government has no clue who they're letting into their disaster area.

Solly sir but you just lost ALL my respect.

You obviously have no idea what a German rescueteam means. You think they will put any idiot in a plane without food to go do something down there in a destroyed area?? Think again man!

Big deal could they spare it! Just looking  for publicity. Will hardly help.

Now I understand a few who live here and why Thailand is a Cesspit of Impulses

Talking to a brick wall and you would get a better answer or comment

One thing for sure you cannot give Thailand any aid as even the cash gets lost

Of course they can afford it. But so can many others in Asia! "Friend" of Thailand, China, has not been seen to offer any immediate aid.

"Will not help" Maybe, depends on how many "hands" the money (or goods) flow through, to see what little is left to help those in need. Or was your statement made, bearing in mind the rampant corruption in much of Thai society?

Or perhaps you have another agenda?
