BANGKOK: -- As flood water levels in many southern provinces are receding and situation is easing slowly, but flooding in low-lying areas surrounding Songkhla lake remains critical due to high tide.

The flood situation at five districts around the lake is still not eased.

Local authorities said more than 50 schools have been forced to close for three days and are likely to remain closed for the whole week.

More than 100 water buffaloes of the over 6,000 raised by farmers around the Songkhla lake have died after they have to wander in the water and stay on roads for several weeks, and short of hay to eat.

Flood levels around the areas remain constant.

This was because water drainage into Songkhla Lake is at slow pace due to high tide in the sea.

High tide is expected on Jan 15.

Provincial authorities are now cooperating with the Thai Navy to mobilize 38 water-propelling boats to be deployed under two bridges in order to accelerate water flow into the sea.

The government is blocking CNN weather forecasts which mention the flooding in the south. This has been happening for a while.
