It was a long time ago, but I recall thinking (during Reagan and Bush I) that we spent $$$ trillions of dollars to get the Soviet Union to collapse economically, then wouldn't offer any financial assistance at all while many of their people froze to death because their economy was in such tatters.

Putin seems to disagree with that: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/after-the-fall-of-the-soviet-union-the-us-tried-to-help-russians/2015/05/04/cc4f7c20-f043-11e4-8666-a1d756d0218e_story.html?utm_term=.c6cfe47fe5a9

That very well may be the case.  I didn't do any searching, I just recall a gut feeling I had at the time, and that was over 20 years ago.  Probably around the time my family was in contact with long disconnected relatives of my grandparents who still live in Russia.  More correctly, they located them in Kazakhstan at that time- as a result of one of Stalin's purges. They currently live close to Moscow.

Seems even Trump feels Russia needs to be held to task for their current invasions of other countries.

Our relation with Russia has turned sour due to their CURRENT aggressions.  It has nothing to do with the cold war.  Most who were in power then are long gone.

Exactly how is Russia a threat? Besides of course U.S hawks trying to demonize them to justify an increase of military spending.

Russia could have invaded the east of Ukraine. In fact they had plenty justifications to do so. Yet all they did was annex Crimea, which is, and has always, been populated with an overwelming majority of Russians. How is that different from Kosovo or the Falkland Island?

Russia is a threat due to a variety of reasons.  Cyber threats are a biggie right now.  They've hacked into many country's computers.  They've invaded Ukraine, occupied Georgia, taken part of Moldova, and devastated Syria.  Plus, attempted (or did) influence the US election.

Russia has no right to be in Ukraine.  Kinda like saying Mexico should invade Southern California because lots of Mexicans are living there. LOL!!!!

Who has invaded and occupied Kosovo?

Brennan is on the way out, as are many other decent and wise American heads. He and the others will be replaced with very rich old white men who have little or no experience with the offices they'll be heading.

Brennan does not need to kiss Trump's cape.  I respect him for speaking his mind.  Trump has proved 1,000 times how he can't handle constructive criticism.  For Trump, it's either praise him, or suffer his wrath.  Trump has problems written all over his orange face.

Several countries are having problems with Russia right now.  But since this is about Trump and the US, I was referring to the US.

Does #2 come before or after #4?

Isn't there another number that comes before #4?

Sorry about the mistake. It should be 1,2,3,4.

It's pretty hard from some of the Trump supporters to count all the way to 5.   Hopefully they won't have to count his tenure in years that pass 4 either.

CIA, do shut up.
Trump was democratically elected. You was not.

And Nixon was democratically elected in 1972. Nixon was to discover that being President didn't give him a blank cheque. As maybe Trump will.

Here's one of many reasons why Russia should be dealt with at arm's length by the US.  It also shows how the US intelligence services made gargantuan errors in the late 1940's and early 1950's.  Additionally, it shows how important the CIA can be at times and, in a current perspective, what a dangerous ass Trump is for dissing the CIA while concurrently being bosom buddies with Putin.

During the 1940's, the US made giant efforts to develop the best bomber plane in the world; the B-29 Superfortress.  It came into service during the last months of WWII.  Some B-29's experienced problems over China and were told by military minders to land in Russia.  That, in hindsight, proved to be a big mistake by US's OSS (which later became the CIA). and other US intelligent services.  Three planes ditched in easternmost USSR.  Stalin detained the US pilots while concurrently directing his top Soviet engineers to reverse-engineer the Superfortress.  No one in the US knew that was happening until a Soviet air show, several years later.  The Soviet version of the B-29 was identical down to the tiniest detail, except with red star markings, and the names of the gauges in Russian.    In essence, US engineers taught Russians how to build planes that the Russians would have taken decades to build if left to their own devices.  Those planes enabled the USSR to enter into the nuclear arms race on an even par with the US.

Sixty years later, Trump is playing a dangerous game.  Trump knows little of history and instead plays fast and loose with a Twitter-fueled foreign policy.  He hates the CIA one day, and says he loves them the next.  He loves Putin today, but may hate him tomorrow.  Trump has the emotional maturity of a spoiled and bratty 6 year old.  The next 4 years won't be boring with such a loose cannon in the Oval Office.  I won't be surprised if some of us see mushroom clouds on the horizon - well, at least they'll make colorful sunsets, if you live to tell the tale.

Russia accuses cybersecurity experts of treasonous links to CIA /: Two former officials of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) and an employee of the Russian company Kaspersky Lab, specializing in computer security, were arrested and charged by the Russian courts with treason on behalf of the US.

An INC report in early January accusing Moscow of having sponsored and executed several large-scale piracy, including the emails of the National Democratic Committee during the election campaign. The report, of which only a redacted version was made public, did not contain any tangible technical evidence, but the high level of confidence displayed by the CIA in particular, suggested by several experts, that the American agency had been able to corroborate its assertions through Russian human sources.

Good post, above.  Russians are masters at espionage.  In contrast, Trump is like a little kid at a jet engine factory; "wow, look at all those pipes and shiny metal pieces!"  They probably have a dossier an inch thick on Trump, complete with compromising photos, videos, and incriminating data.  The Russkies probably know precisely what STD's Trump has (residual, in remission, or otherwise), what drugs he's used (pharma and non-pharma) and the names of every married woman he seduced in the past 50 years.

No wonder Trump is all smiles and accommodation when it comes to Putin and his henchmen.

On a side note:  An long-time on & off coke snorter saw Trump's sad performance at the first debate he had with HRC.  She laughed out loud.  She said Trump, with his constant sniffing and body language/facial expressions, was acting exactly like someone who had just taken a long line of coke.

In a move that seems to validate the unconfirmed report by Ex-MI6 officer Christopher Steele,  there's a purge of spies underway in Moscow where two high-ranking Russian security service agents, a cybersecurity expert and a fourth man have been charged with treason for passing along secrets to American intelligence.
