Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on all media institutions in the country to disseminate accurate news and avoid immoral acts and commentary that could sway public opinion or that of the judiciary. In a gathering on Saturday evening with approximately 1,000 local journalists from across the country and spokespeople from state institutions, Mr. Hun Sen expressed his interest in journalism in Cambodia and announced January 14 as the day he would meet journalists annually in the future.

In the meeting, the prime minister called on all media institutions, including newspapers, radio and TV, to adhere to professionalism and avoid being a commentator, defender and judge at the same time. “Radio and television commentators are probably overdoing their roles, which sometimes affects the public and the court. We [journalists] are just providers of accurate information,” he said.

“Please do not act like referees or judges. Sometimes they act like politicians and say what the party should do. Their role should only be to state the facts and repeat what the party said. We are not judges or prosecutors. I sometimes see they are overacting.” Mr. Hun Sen also advised journalists to disseminate accurate information and avoid exchanging news for money, which only increases corruption in society.
