BANGKOK: -- Damages to southern rail tracks and signal system by flooding in the South were initially estimated at about 1.3 billion baht, State Railways of Thailand governor Wutthichart Kalayanamit disclosed on Monday.

Repairs of the damaged rail tracks and signal system are under way and the work undertaken by the SRT’s civil engineering unit is expected to be completed in about 10 days and train services in the southern region will resume as normal, provided that there are no more heavy rains which may disrupt maintenance work.

However, he said that further maintenance would still be needed to restore the services to perfect condition and this would require additional budget from the government.

"to restore the services to perfect condition" ... when was it ever perfect. In thirty years of travelling and too many countries to recount it is the worst rail link i have been on.

Wrong gauge , single track and snail slow ~ time to redo the entire bangkok to butterworth line. It could be one of the great train journeys of the world if they planned it right.
