A former deputy chief Buddhist monk at a Kandal province pagoda has been arrested for allegedly cheating a businesswoman out of $180,000. Keo Kalyan, 38, who was deputy chief of Wat Asrom Oudom Prey Mean in Kandal Stung district, was detained on Wednesday.

Interior Ministry police officer Ly Sothy said that while Mr. Kalyan was a monk, he persuaded the 48-year-old businesswoman to buy a big statue of Phrea Kinesh. He allegedly told her it was made of bronze, was sacred and was more than 1,000 years old.

It could protect against all kinds of danger and would help the victim to have great success and bring her riches with her businesses. Mr. Sothy said that after negotiation on the $180,000 sale price, the victim sent the money on June 9, 2016, to Mr. Kalyan via his account with Acleda Bank.
