Bangkok as Venice by 2020? Online rumor spooks city folk

BANGKOK: -- Worried Bangkokians were spooked by an online rumor that the capital city was going to be submerged under water by as soon as 2020.

But it turns out that news of Bangkok's demise was a bit premature.

However, the end may come one day and the authorities must do what they can to protect the city.

And besides, a great flood like the one experienced in 2011 is inevitable and will happen sooner rather than later, said a top expert.

The rumors came after comments made by Dr Seri Suparasit, an expert on flooding but he has clarified his remarks with Thai News Agency in a video to quell the alarm.

The expert said that Bangkok would not disappear as early as 2020. But in 100 years it was another matter. He said that water levels rising because of global warming could see them at one meter above today's levels.

And that could make Bangkok truly be the Venice of the East.

The government needs to make sure that flood prevention measures are made for the future. There are other cities around the world facing much worse than Bangkok - the authorities can do it in Bangkok if the will is there, said Dr Seri.

But on the subject of another great flood like the one in 2011 that saw great swathes of the capital under flood waters for several months he said that this kind of thing was cyclical.

"It is inevitable that that will happen again," he said.

A video was made of the comments that cautioned that people should be careful what they share online as "truth" when it is merely rumor.

Bangkok as Venice by 2020!

Superb news. Lasagna instead of Larb.

Pizza in place of Papaya Pok Pok.

                         And gondolas outing the Tuk-Tuks

Bring it on  . . .

And they say this at the moment Thailand is going to buy the first submarine......:shock1:

But yeah, flooding is a bigger thread than neighbouring countries. They need floodpreventionmeasurements instead of submarines.

Someone with too little cash trying to crash the property market, in order to buy a home?

Sea level changes are due to a number of very complex, interrelated factors and at present cannot be predicted with any great degree of accuracy.  However, the land under Bangkok is definitely subsiding at a rate of about 2cm per year, which can be measured and predicted with great accuracy!

Most of Bangkok is 1 to 2 meters above sea level now.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that it will be partially submerged in 50 years or less, just measuring subsidence.  If you add sea level rise, we may see yearly flooding within 20 years or less.

It's time to start building those dikes!

Or move the city out.

Nothing will happen until the city is under water ..... the someone will start to think about it.

No point planning ahead for something that hasn't happened yet.

I hope they have their priorities straight and build a wall around Soi Cowboy first.

Great! Then we can finally have our very own Carnival, populated with clowns and jesters.

Hold it! I think we already have all that. It's just that we call it by different names, "government" and "politicians", respectively.

now i know why they are buying the submarines

yup.  no longer a need for sewer lines of septic tanks.  the canals can take care of it all.

To make things slightly worse (due to the already low level of BKK), high tide combined with seasonal winds can push the sea in-land where there should be outflow. The outflow system consists of many rivers and canals, and there are locks in place, but managing those is a very complex matter! The Dutch - with lots of experience in the matter - have offered expertise on quite a few occasions, but apparently didn't fit the Thainess profile of relevant advisors.

No worry for us. In fact a 100 years is a long way down the rocky road for mankind. He will no doubt bring about his demise long before then. Right Donald get your finger off the button.

Please don't try and talk sense to the military government here. When spending bahts its 1 for infrastructure 9 (out of 10) for boy toys. Could be the last piece in place for the new Thai Disneyworld along with the aircraft carrier and the new "stealth" cruiser.

Row row row your boat gently down the stream.

Ordering the boat this week!!

Yeh Yeh,  but subs are great toys and as most Thai's are still sucking on their  dummies they haven't learnt anything about the real world as yet.

Naturally, farang know  nothing and in any case Thailand flooding is different .

Build more canals up to Pattaya, and move the Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza there. Tourists will take a boat tour from any corner of the world.

London-Pattaya Ferry service will start!

Good idea, I'm sure the politicians own plenty of low level they would love to sell at an inflated price for a new main city.

Thai answer,  you tink tu mut.

I'm surprised Thais were spooked about something happening more than 15mins from now. Usually there's zero regard for the future.

No worry for us. In fact a 100 years is a long way down the rocky road for mankind. He will no doubt bring about his demise long before then. Right Donald get your finger off the button.

100 years eh?

Worries about flooding may delay roadmap. Election could be postponed...

not sure why people think Thais are short sighted. Miami is in a worse position and will be uninhabited in 100 years but it hasnt effected real estate prices at all yet

No thank you. Keep your city rabble where they are. We do not want to spoil the country areas.

This issue, as well as a similar problem for other countries with low-lying coastal areas, has been "news" for quite awhile. There was something in Time Magazine in 2011, and I doubt that was the first time the prediction was made.

BANGKOK — Day after day, Bangkok sinks. Inexorably. The most pessimistic experts are afraid part of Thailand's capital will be submerged by 2030. Specialists complain about the absence of any policy in place to prevent a disaster that seems bound to occur.

1 rising sea-level

2 BKK ground sinking (dense population, heavy buildings.....)

3 heavier rainfalls

Actually not my idea but from a great visionary. The project involves building 4 satellite cities that will be connected by rail and road. All government institutions will be moved to these new cities and new buildings in Bangkok will be restricted. Then the coup put waste to the project and never heard again. What a wasted 10+ years to seek a solution for fast sinking Bangkok.
