Thai exports to grow 5% this year

 

 

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's exports could jump to 5% growth this year as there are several contributing factors.

 

This was what the Ministry of Commerce hoped when it assessed the country’s trade and economical conditions.

 

The Commerce Ministry’s Office of Policy and Strategic Trade deputy director Ms Pimchanok Wornkorporn said  that Thailand’s exports for 2017 will continue to grow by between 2.5 – 3.5%.

 

But she said if the economies of Thailand’s major trading partners improve there is a strong likelihood that export growth could be as high as 5%.

 

She said factors contributing to Thailand’s export growth is the rise in global fuel prices which shows signs of appreciating to between US$50-60 per barrel and the devaluation of the Thai baht which now stands at US$35.5-37.5 baht to the dollar.

 

However she said the policies of US President Donald Trump could become both a risk and an opportunity for the country.

 

She said the US President has plan to introduce trade restrictions on goods from China and Mexico which may inadvertently affect Thailand as  China is one of the country’s leading trading partners.

The Commerce Ministry really has no idea.

Last year was a great improvement since the government protests in 2013 began with an overall negligible contraction in exports and trade deficit.
