BANGKOK — Users of Google’s popular mapping feature were surprised Friday to find much of Thailand – and all of Bangkok – had become parkland.

 

After years of campaigns for more green space, it was neither government policy nor parks department action which transformed all of smoggy Bangkok into a park; rather, it appeared to an amusing glitch that saw the rather aggressive expansion of a protected wildlife sanctuary to absorb much of the nation.

Well, I wouldn't trust Google Thailand much anyway. A few years ago someone clicked a wrong button and designated most of Thailand's roads (thanon) and streets (soi) as "alley" (trok). In some cases, both! So you can find "Thanon Ratchadamnoen Alley," for example.

Speaking of map service inaccuracies, if you ever use Waze, have a look at Phaholyothin Road. Waze identifies it as a "freeway" all the way to Victory Monument.
