BANGKOK, 27 January 2017 (NNT) – The Fine Arts Department is in the process of landscaping Sanam Luang ahead of a ceremony to erect the main pillar of the royal crematorium of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Director-General of the Fine Arts Department Anan Chuchote reported steady progress in the construction of the royal crematorium in Sanam Luang ceremonial ground as well as the repair of royal carriages and palanquins for use in the late King’s funeral procession. He said the department is currently preparing Sanam Luang for the ceremony to raise and worship the crematorium’s main pillar, expected to take place between late March and early April.

He elaborated that models are now being made for the various sculptures to accompany the royal crematorium. Meanwhile, the royal chariots and palanquins are being disassembled for maintenance and embellishments.

Landscape architect Porntham Thammawimol made known that the royal crematorium will have four ponds at all of its four corners. Its north side will be decorated with features that reflect the late King’s royal duties, such as a rice field, a “monkey’s cheek” reservoir and a Chaipattana aerator. The site will also be adorned with yellow and white flowers to symbolize the beloved monarch’s day of birth.
