The Independent Civil Servants Association (CICA) has called on the government to take action against officials who failed to turn up for work over Chinese New Year. The association said absentees could affect society and law enforcement in the future.

CICA said on Saturday that in the Chinese New Year season, most state institutions and other institutions in the city and provinces were quiet. Officials were missing even though the government calendar did not give them a holiday. The lack of strict measures from the government on this issue has had a big effect on national traditions and on health, education and other services.

CICA president Heak Pring urged Prime Minister Hun Sen to take action to stop this problem. Otherwise it would affect public services, culture and law enforcement in the future because many civil servants and Cambodians of Chinese descent celebrated Chinese New Year “The government has to implement holidays in accordance with the calendar the government has set,” he said.
