Pattaya lifts ban on sales booths during beach festivals

PATTAYA:--Pattaya authorities have lifted a ban on beachfront sales booths during events that promote tourism, but promised to reinstate the ban if vendors abuse the privilege.

Teerasak Jatupong, director of Peace and Security Department chaired a Jan. 23 meeting with City Councilman and Pattaya Business and Tourism Association President Sinchai Wattanasartsathorn and representatives from food, beverage, culture, arts and tourism groups to debate the reprieve imposed on beachfront sales booths last year.

The officials pointed out that the Ministry of Interior in 2003 had permitted a safe area for vendor sales on public property to promote tourism and projects related to art and culture.

The Pattaya City Council last year had imposed a blanket ban on beachfront sales during festivals, citing traffic woes and tourist complaints. Under the prohibition, only vendors with permits and trading licenses were allowed.

No. In fact they promised to reinstate the ban if vendors abuse the privilege.

Enough w/ the paranoia and victimism.

Yeah right, when the baht buses only stop at at designated places will I believe that.

Art festival this weekend in Pattaya.  Newest wrinkle seems to be allowing cars and trucks to park right on the beach promenade walkway to hawk their wares--at least they were parked on the walkway in a long line yesterday. Haven't been down today.  Pretty much blocked the walkway to walkers.  Bad idea and sends the wrong message that cars are ok on sidewalks.  Lots of vendors selling all sorts of crap--t-shirts, shoes, women's clothing, sunglasses, beach stuff, etc.--everything except much art.  Maybe there will  be more art today.

Not much of an "art festival"-- Thailand has great artists (pottery, wood carving, metal or stone sculpturing, cloth and paper creations... the list is endless) but what I saw were mostly the mass produced oil paintings made for a quick sell to tourists. Sad there was not much publicity to promote area artists to participate...thinking of 2-3 farngs that do beautiful water coloring and one makes jewelry. They knew nothing of it. Sad the area local and international schools were not informed to participate. Definitely this was organized by a "rookie" that had no idea of the possibilities. (I did enjoy the food trucks parked in front of Central...nice assortment of food) (Thai food is mostly north of Pattay Klang, along the Beach promenade.)

Has nothing whatsoever to do with baht buses stopping wherever.

TVF desperation to sneer at its finest, throwing out a lil' red herring.

Baht buses stopping wherever has nothing to do with 'traffic woes'??....... You need to get down off your soapbox and put your head under a tap!

Or maybe you should just leave Pattaya and Thailand to try to find happiness where you can be absolutely assured of proper consideration for tourists. The article tells you what the ban really was all about and how it could be reimposed: Should vendors create a nuisance of themselves or should fights or other violence occur, it will be quickly revoked. And that, contrary to your whinge, does show consideration for possible tourist complaints. Hence they had begun requiring licenses and permits to control the influx of idiots. Citing traffic before was a convenient excuse though certainly many more booths set up randomly everywhere must cause a lot more traffic on Beach Rd.--and foot traffic woes as well. Now baht bus stopping at designated areas might help the gridlock slightly but after all gridlock is gridlock. Tourists very much like getting on & off wherever they want to, not 100 meters down the road, so it may be that the designated areas will actually be a greater cause for tourist complaint. And what's the point during gridlock anyway. Aren't you "concerned" about those complaints?
