As a 59 year old from UK I'm weighing up the pros and cons of only coming here on tourist visas and spending enough time in UK to maintain my status and NHS entitlement there.

This thread encourages me to maintain that status. This way I can buy relatively cheap long stay travel insurance and go home for cataract or hip operations free on the NHS if I need them.

The only disadvantage is that I cannot fully let my UK property as I need to live there when in the UK.

I've had surgery in Thailand and could not fault anything from beginning to end,and follow up visits. All Doctors at this public hospital that I dealt with, listened and had no problem answering questions. Superior to my own country of NZ.

Praise indeed as my experience with NZ hospitals and medical in general is they are far superior to the Australian and UK system.  My best friend is a doctor (Brit now practicing in OZ) he has worked as a visiting specialist in a couple of Thai hospitals and even he sometimes gets work done in Thailand.  Another, quite well known farang identity in Thailand told me of how he would regularly fly back to the UK to have a check up with his Harley Street specialist to be told don't bother.  Thailand has some world class specialists in the field he was concerned with.  And my only emergency experience was with a young female backpacker who was seriously ill and had heavy internal bleeding.  I rushed her off to the hospital whilst the farang boarding house owner phoned ahead.  They were waiting for us at emergency and had her Dutch doctor on the phone.  Instantly whisked away for tests and some surgery.  She and her partner later told me the place was more modern and cleaner than anything in Holland and there they would most likely have had to wait for hours before being seen.

My personal advice would be that if you live or spend a lot of time in Thailand get procedures done there but if not and there could be complications then get them done in your home country.  but aI believe that if you go to the right place and see the right people then Thailand is good.

I have only had dental work done but my Australian dentist has told me the work is as good as anything he has seen.  My dentist trained and worked for seven years in New York.

That's a very sensible decision. I'm now in the process of achieving the same end by spending half my year in the UK following 15 years here on a full time basis, it's the only answer that makes real sense.

I had both eyes done at a private clinic in Phuket, about 10 years ago, for 25,000. Perfect result. Now the eyes are fading again due to pure old age, which no surgery can cure.

In light of the prices that have been quoted both here and in the UK, I'm keen to hear again from the OP to see if he's changed his views on things, assuming he can still see the keyboard.

Two years ago had both eyes done at Vejthani Hospital and price was 35k per eye (although believe estimate was 50K from nurse prior to operation).  It was same price as charged Thai wife a year or so earlier.  No problems.

Just had email from sister in Texas that she had one eye done last month and cutter malfunctioned and instead of withdrawing the knife it sliced into eye (only fact her head was strapped down saved her from very serious injury).  She had almost no vision in eye from birth but expect she may not be anxious to do good eye after this experience.  So not at all convinced safer to obtain elsewhere.  This is one of the most performed operations in the world so generally safe anywhere in the hands of a competent surgeon.  As for drugs availability am of an age that well recall our western world thalidomide tragedy so not about to brag too much.

Are you sure you have been quoted for cataract surgery not laser correction?
£500 for both eyes - I think you have wrong information.
I paid £1500 privately for one eye about 10 years ago.

Lazer Correction at BKK Hospitals in Thailand is 12500 per eye. Realy funny sensation No pain they freeze it done in about 2mins ,and you can drive home happy. Cracking Lady Doc as well.[emoji160][emoji102]

I presume this is nothing to do with cataracts?

His post was an expansion in answer to the quite it contained and very much to do with the thread as a question was asked if there may be an error in what cost is being quoted.

This is going to sound crazy but my FIL had me drive him to a lady who worked out of her home. She put a pin in his ear and then a slight cut with a razor blade above his ear. We had to go back and repeat the procedure six weeks later and his cataracts went away. The total cost was about a thousand baht for both eyes. I was totally stunned but it worked.

Over the years I've heard of many types of ailments being cured by Mor Sins here. Some work and some don't, but it is a pity this forum dissuades anyone from recounting their experiences for fear of ridicule. It would make this forum a more interesting place, posters are surely able to take such accounts with a pinch of salt rather than the usual derisive posts based on little more than ignorance and prejudice..

I've also heard many accounts of farang paying outrageous prices for treatment in the greed gathering apace private hospitals. They seem to think the more they pay the better the result, not true. The doctors/surgeons are the very same who dedicate a part of their time to government hospitals.

My own view is that medical treatment in Thailand is, in general, prohibitively expensive. There was a thread a while ago from someone recommending a hospital in Southern India. Bearing in mind hospitals are greedy and unregulated in this country, I'd take my chances with a Mor Sin or a hospital in Goa over anything here now.

I was thinking the same thing.  500 quid for both eyes?  Where.  In a back alley in Brixton?

Seems everyone here is calling me a liar I was quoted this price at a clinic in Finchley north london

I don't think anyone is calling you a liar, a lot of people are however urging you to tread very carefully with what is clearly a very low cost medical procedure. At the very least, get two more competitive quotes before you sign up for discount surgery on your eyes and end up blind.

You said this was a London private hospital in your original post and normally the price will be dependent on the type of lens used.  Expect you could find a much lower price than 50k per eye here at a clinic or government hospital (paying customer).  Believe free to 15k would be what most people here pay if not using major private hospital facilities.

Has anybody heard anything good or bad about Mettapracharak Hospital (Wat Rai Khing )? They have a branch very close to my condo at ekamai and i have heard good things about them.

Metta Pracharak is a government eye hospital in Nakhon Phathom and good as far as I have ever heard. But this is the first I have heard of a branch in Bangkok.  Are you sure the Bangkok branch is a full fledged hospital?

BTW OP, the quote you got is impossible even for one eye. Either it is a questionable facility or something went wrong in the communication.

Ask again and also clarify what is and is nto included...i.e. the artifical lens.

See this thread for recent overview of prices for cataract surgery in both public and private  Thai hospitals

My friend had the first eye done in Nakhon Pathom, and the second eye done at the ekamai branch. Cost aroud 28000 per eye. I visited the hospital on friday, very impressed with the doctor. It is called Metta international eye centre in english and Metta Pracharak in Thai dr disagreed with more than one of the rutnin diagnosis. She doubted that i have glaucoma, maybe some eye hypertension. We agreed i should stop the xalatan for one month and she will check the eyes again. Took some photos of the nerves and macalur and showed some inflamation of the maculars which she said is a side affect of xalatan. The rutnin dr also said i had some narrowing of a pathway of liquid or something that i should have a laser treatment but not necessary if i have my cataracts done. This dr disagreed and said she did not think it was enough to require treatment. Also my cataracts will probably give me some vision improvement but no need to hurry. She also explained that normal eye pressure for the caucassion eye is greater that Thai. Max for Thai is about 18, but farang 22-23 is ok.

I got a quote from Sirikit Hospital the odd year ago: 30k Thai, 60k farang, one eye. Go figure. There seems to have been a "promotion" by the government some time ago, but that was time-limited and only for khun Thai.

Had both eyes done at SupamitrSena hospital (20km from Ayutthaya), 25k each with a night's stay and pre/post checks all included. Excellent service and highly professional, as it's the hospitals specialisation
Sorry just came back to this thread not Sri Racha i meant Satahip the navel hospital . Must have been thinking of something else
