The General Commissariat of National Police has announced it will take legal action against police officers found abusing their positions and demanding money from people at illegal checkpoints. In the announcement dated February 6, National Police Chief Neth Savoeun said that citizens had recently complained about illegal checkpoints, which caused disruptions to their daily lives and seriously affected the implementation of government policy.

To eliminate illegal road and waterway checkpoints, the National Police said provincial police will educate and advise police officers under their supervision to join the force to serve and improve the livelihood of citizens without using their power illegally. Administrative and legal action will be taken without exception against any officer secretly setting up illegal checkpoints or using their position to take money from anyone unlawfully, the announcement added.

General Savoeun said that police chiefs in both the provinces and provincial capitals will be held accountable to the National Police in the event of complaints about illegal checkpoints. He also ordered that roads and waterways be patrolled regularly to eliminate abuses of power.
