Watch out for penumbral lunar eclipse on Saturday morning

The National Astronomical Research Institute has urged members of the public to watch a natural phenomenon known as the penumbral lunar eclipse on Saturday morning from 5.30 am to 6.40 am.

 

A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon align in an almost straight line. When this happens, the Earth blocks some of the Sun’s light from directly reaching the Moon’s surface and covers part of the Moon with the outer part of its shadow, also known as the penumbra.

 

Mr Sarun Posayachinda, deputy director of the institute, said on Thursday that the Moon will be most immersed in the shadow at 7.43 am and it will appear for a short period of time before the Moon disappears into the horizon.
