Army follows up Patong Beach regulation

PHUKET, 13 February 2017 (NNT) – The 4th Army Region has joined hands with local authorities in Phuket to follow up on public area and vehicle rental regulations to ensure orderliness.

The 4th Army Region deputy chief Maj Gen Pornsak Poonsawat has led a group of officials from the military, local authorities, and delegates from local businesses in Patong, Phuket, to visit Patong Beach promoting guidelines to the beach area, including surveying public transport services, land reclamation for public use, parking space for rented vehicles, to maximizing the convenience for tourists.

The 4th Army Region deputy chief has said regulation campaigns have been put in place since 2016, however some groups have failed to comply.

He has said the campaign is aimed to impress foreign visitors, and encourage them to visit again in the future.

On this occasion, Patong Municipality Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup has said the regulation campaign will uphold the same principles, while strict legal action will be imposed against individuals who fail to comply to the regulations.

PHUKET: -- Officers from the Region 4 Army Headquarters in Phuket visited Patong Beach last week to address complaints about the bike rental management system, particularly the decades-old problem of theft of space from the public.

Vendors and locals in the area said that the beach looked disorganized as dozens of rental bikes were parked chaotically and illegally along the road.

Among those present were officials from Army Region 4, police, navy, Patong Municipality and others.

The distain, the absolute contempt for this man the inner rage I feel against him and all those of his ilk will only be matched by the complete and utter non compliance, abandonment, corruption and disregard of these and any other laws, rules and regulations in that God forsaken sewer.

Why oh why do the psychopathically criminal have to get their hands on these places, everywhere you Go!

You could not run a place better 'into the ground' than they are doing in Patong, 10 out of 10. Far from tourists returning they are going never to return, facts speak for themselves (I mean the actual amount of tourist about) not the fictitious figures and propaganda put out for show... A crying shame as such a great place...

A elderly well travelled german lady I was talking to a few weeks back said  , you know the problem with Thailand? Is thai men, the women are hardworking and want the best - maybe she has a point?? most of my UK friends who used to come here are now heading for Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines, most say they've had enough of Thailand now.

Strangely enough, they only seem to be targeting the motorbike rental guys.

What about the rental car guys? As annoying as the space-stealing motorbike rentals are, the cars for rent take up a lot more of the public parking spaces.

Then there's the zero enforcement of the "no parking/riding on the footpath" regulation, even though the municipality invested in new signage that can't be missed. I guess "regulation" really means "suggestion" as far as enforcement is concerned..

Nice to see a true statement.  Are the jet ski cockroaches still victimizing naive tourists down there?

Yes and No.

The jetskis are still there, encroaching on more and more of the beach as high season wears on. As for victimizing naive tourists, the "damaged jetski" scams seem to have dropped off to almost zero. I suspect that a deal was worked out between the Army and the operators when the Army was going to clear them all off the beach in the first go-round a while back. Something like "stop the scams, and we'll let you continue using the beach".

I have just returned from Phuket (Patong) and promised myself to never return there again.

The whole island is 1 big taxi scam, they have the whole island in their grip and earn lots of money by doing so.

Food, a lot more expensive then in Bangkok, was so happy to eat again in Bangkok for a reasonable price.

Nightlife: 140 baht for a beer in a beerbar (ok, they had some coyotes dancing), same price as in a Bangkok go go.

I don't mind to pay for value but Phuket is a complete rip off, I will spread the word at home so that none of my friends fall into this trap.

Maybe they will learn when people vote with their feet.

You don't have to go to Bangkok to see the difference in prices, take KFC as an example - set meal of 2 piece Original chicken, fries and drink:

Patong (Jungceylon) 169 Baht

Chalong (Villa market) 120 Baht (and you get 1 Wingz Zabb extra with this set)

so an extra spicy hot wing and 49 Baht cheaper, same island but Patong Punk Prices...

“At the moment, it has been taken care of and the beach road is organized again. However, we will keep an eye on this in the future to ensure that rental vehicles are not being parked in unauthorized spaces,” said Army Region 4 Deputy Commander Pornsak Poonsawat.

Does that mean the rental bikes are gone from the street? Because I'm sure these are public parking spaces and not for businesses. The tuk tuk mafia is also a big issue. Tried to park near the beach some time ago and was chased away by some angry tuk tuk guy who claimed it was for taxis only. Heard many stories of people getting flat tires and scratches to their cars when parked in these tuk tuk occupied areas.

How many tourists are "impressed" by a show of military force alongside the beach?

It'd probably convince me I didn't want to return.

But I said the same in a similar thread a couple of days ago.

Yeah...Those M-16's are so sexy....! Makes me feel right at home.
