BANGKOK:  -- The government’s first rice auction of the new year held at the Foreign Trade Department on Tuesday has attracted 73 bidders who are mostly rice millers and rice exporters.

FTD deputy director-general Adul Chotenisakorn said Wednesday that altogether 2.87 million tonnes of 17 rice varieties, including 100% Hom Mali, Grade 2 Hom Changvad, 5% white rice and 5% Pathum Thani rice would be put on public auction.

He said, however, that FTD officials would have to check the qualifications of the 73 bidders to make sure that they are qualified and will be allowed to submit their sealed bids on February 16.

Perhaps Yingluck and advisors, "if we're going to be charged for it we might as well buy it".

Wonder if any of those involved in ''keeping corrupt people'' out of any involvement with government and or public funds, bidding, etc are doing background checks on every person involved in making a bid and those setting up the procedures and recieving bids for this rice package?

They should  be checked against a huge blacklist of companies/people involved in the last rice boondoggle (6000 reported by one authority) how long in business, bank guarentee to pay for rice prior to their access to it, etc.

Only 2 days before they open bids, the FTD could not have time to do due dilegence in the background checks varification work in 2 days. Hope there is a much longer time frame from today until the final winners and all bids are made public.

Any family members involved?

" to make sure that they are qualified and will be allowed to submit their sealed bids on February 16."

why not wait until the auction is over, then find out there are several bogus companies, like they

normally do, trying to be proactive, thats a new concept.
