Cambodia operators agree to stop discount deal race

Featured Replies

Cambodian mobile operators have agreed to end deep-discounted mobile voice and data deals after admitting they had deliberately engaged in predatory pricing, The Phnom Penh Post reports, citing a statement from the country’s telecom regulator TRC. The agreement follows weeks of escalation in competitive pricing, with rival operators launching massive call and data promotional offers.

The Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia (TRC) held a meeting with the country’s six mobile operators. “Almost all of the operators agreed that they would stop running their discounted promotions next week, with only one refusing yet to commit”, TRC spokesman Im Vutha said. “The operators confirmed that what they were doing was engaging in unfair competition and issuing unprofitable products”, he added.

Vutha also said that if mobile network operators continue to disregard the regulator’s demands, legal action will be taken. Cambodia’s six mobile operators are Smart, Metfone, Cellcard, qb, Seatel and Cootel.

CamGSM, the operator of Cellcard, started the discount deal race in January, when it launched a promotion that allowed its customers to exchange KHR 1 for KHR  100 worth of mobile services. Smart Axiata then introduced a KHR 1 for KHR 125 promotion. Last week, Seatel started offering KHR 2 for KHR 2,000 worth of on-network calls and KHR 1 for 2.7 gigabytes of data.

1 Cambodian Riel equals

mixed up currency? The operators sale is USD only.

Back home in USA (yeah, yeah, back home.... blah blah) this would be known as collusion, an illegal restriction of trade. Anti-competitive at the very least.
