February 16, 20179 yr Feel like I need bit more exercise, but as I'm in my 70's I think walking is probably the best way to get it. However, walking around the streets in my area is fraught with danger, what with soi dogs, potholes and broken footpaths etc, it's not a pleasant experience. With a treadmill I can walk for an hour or so in the comfort of my own home, and listen to music or watch TV whilst I'm doing it. I had a look at Lazadas offerings and there are 3 hp treadmills available for as low as 17,000 baht, but are they any good? None in that price range offer a warranty which is a bit of a concern, so any other (sensible) suggestions? http://www.lazada.co.th/avarin-3-motorized-treadmill-3-hp-panther-6132233.html
February 16, 20179 yr A cross country trainer could be cheaper and a better all round work out, they will: work out your upper body as well as legs, have a lot less impact on your knees, they are also said to burn more calories than other gym machines. Oh and they don't make half the noise either

Looks a bit too strenuous for someone of my age.
February 16, 20179 yr Author Thanks, I did eventually work out what a cross trainer was, but looks like it might be a bit too strenuous for me.
February 16, 20179 yr I bought this one from Lazada. its not bad, its not extra strong but does the job it has developed a squeak , but for a cheapo 8900 , its ok . think it was 450 for delivery i use it 30 minutes a day. Ps if you use this machine on very high tension setting, i don't think it would last so long. i only use tension setting 1, and its fine http://www.lazada.co.th/g-sport-2-in-1-6-kg-gs-b8001-6274849.html

Only kidding.

Yeah true enough but the cross trainer will give you much more benefit and is more efficient. You can still watch TV while doing it. Anyway up to you it is your choice. :)
February 16, 20179 yr Walking doesn't do much. You need your heart rate elevated. Just Google what a safe elevation is for your age. Very brisk walking would work Sent from my Redmi Note 3 using Tapatalk

Cant do exercise with out this , its just to boring.

February 16, 20179 yr If you only want to walk.. not run then i think you certainly would get a good one for 20k. Because the device would not be used to harsh. But be careful it might just gather dust there because motivation is crucial. I am pretty motivated in general, i hardly skip weightlifting sessions. But cardio session.. pff I hate them and its hard for me to do them often. I do try and I have periods that it goes well but in general i find it hard. A tv in front of it with just walking or fast walking might do it.

I'm just under 90 kg so I think most of them will stand that kind of weight.

I think the one you selected (sorry no expert on treadmills) would do a fine job if your not running but just fast walking. The more it is stressed the easier it breaks. 20k is not much for a treadmill (if you want quality you pay a lot more) but given that you are probably not going to do any serious running this might just suffice. I only know that treadmills are (relatively)expensive if you want quality because they come under more stress as devices like the crosstrainer or rowing machine. But I was serious about making sure you are motivated, most home fitness equipment is not used a lot. But there are people (me and others that I know) that use it and are happy training at home. The majority is not, depends really on what kind of person you are. Not trying to be mean here just helpful that you are sure you want it else its just a waste. But if your the right kind of person something like this could be real useful.

The brand is Proform (here review), and it is 7 years old and is a basic model, Strangely I bought one from the Soi Cat and Dog society. Used. Good price. It seems that many people donate decent things for them to sell to raise funds. Still works like brand new, never any problems. I used to run/jog but it was hard on my knees and that is why I love the elliptical, never any knee issues, no stress.I don't think using the elliptical makes me a better runner, but it is good cardio. An elliptical trainer can hurt the knees depending on what is wrong with them. It hurts my knees. They put a very unusual, unnatural stress on the knees and the rest of the body. You don't move this way in normal life and it can cause muscular imbalances. Here's a good read to get a better understanding of the problem: http://www.livestrong.com/article/525935-can-ellipticals-cause-knee-and-hip-pain/ If you buy a cheap elliptical trainer, the problems could be even worse. You can burn more calories than walking, but it may come at a cost. The OP has been walking most of his life - better he sticks to something he knows he can do. Just one point about walking on a treadmill. It's easier than walking on the ground as you don't push yourself forward. You need a slight incline to equal the intensity of a flat walk outside.
February 19, 20179 yr Don't want to open a new separate thread, but I'm looking for halfway decent rowing-machine. Found this one on Lazada, price is 9900 Baht, but it doesn't look very stable. I'm190cm and 115kg, so a machine designed for the average Thai, would probably break quickly. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you only walk a cheap treadmill will be ok for few months/years, if you run, nothing under 200k is worth spending.

I used to walk more than an hour a day in Australia, but that's because it was a pleasant and safe thing to do. Can't say the same about walking in Thailand, hence the treadmill.

The roads are closed to motor vehicles and bikes from 4 pm each day.
