Kong Raiya, the university student sent to prison in 2015 for writing about a potential “color revolution” in the kingdom, was released yesterday morning and was in a defiant mood.  Mr. Raiya was in his first year at Khemarak University when he was arrested on August 21, 2015, for a Facebook post that was widely shared throughout Cambodia.

“Who dares to launch a color revolution with me? Some day in the future, I will launch a color revolution in order to change this regime running Cambodian society,” he wrote.  “Even if I am sent to prison or killed, I am determined to do this.”

On March 15, 2016, judge Heng Sok convicted Mr. Raiya on charges of inciting chaos and sentenced him to 18 months in prison.  Leaving prison yesterday, Mr. Raiya told reporters he was not afraid now that he had spent time in jail and would continue to work for the betterment of the nation.
