PM to form body to oversee state purchases will awaiting legislation

BANGKOK, 23 February 2017 (NNT) – The government is planning to set up a body to inspect large public and state enterprise purchases and may use Article 44 of the interim constitution to expedite the plan while new legislation on purchases pends approval.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Kreau-ngam elaborated that the government is concerned about mega project purchases exceeding 50 million baht. He further said that the planned body will not interfere in auctioning and purchases but will only inspect complaints, assisting the Administrative Court in handling such cases.

He assured that while the body could become permanent it will not be made into an organization and will only be a commission that could be rolled into the regulatory body created by new legislation for state purchases.

The idea to form the committee came as the legislation is at least 6 months away from taking effect and could allow corruption to take place in projects being undertaken in the meantime.

And expedite any nepotism in connection with current members of the Executive and Legislative branches of government.
