Old mines destroyed in Pursat

Featured Replies

More than 100 landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) were destroyed on Tuesday by deminers in Pursat province’s Veal Veng district. District police officer Solie Mesa told Khmer Times yesterday that a large variety of dangerous material had been found and destroyed.

“All those found were remnants of war that had been buried underground in local farmers’ fields,” he said. Police informed demining experts from Halo Trust Cambodia after district authorities were told about the discovery by local farmers, added Mr. Mesa.

“Over 10 days ago, Halo Trust Cambodia experts discovered and destroyed 106 pieces of different kinds of explosives, including anti-tank mines, DK 82 mortars and rocket-propelled grenades,” he said, adding that Halo Trust’s work in the area was ongoing.     In the early 1980s, large numbers of anti-personnel landmines were laid by the Vietnamese along the border with Thailand, some in an effort to keep the remnants of the Khmer Rouge from infiltrating back into the country from bases in Thailand.
