Staff at Italian hospital suspected of shirking on grand scale

ROME (Reuters) - Doctors and nurses are among 94 hospital workers from Naples who have been placed under investigation on suspicion of repeatedly skipping work, police said on Friday.

One supervisor at the Loreto Mare hospital was instead found working as a chef in a hotel, while an on-duty doctor was spotted playing tennis and going shopping. Two health workers were caught clocking in 20 colleagues each day to make it look like they were on the job.

Police said 55 of the suspects had been placed under house arrest. There was no immediate comment from the hospital.

In a bid to tackle shirkers in the notoriously inefficient public sector, the government signed into law last year a measure to immediately suspend people caught dodging work, pending an investigation into whether they should then be fired.

Managers who fail to comply with the new rules risk being fired themselves.

Good for catching them in shirking their responsibilities. Not only fire the guilty but also fine them for taking unearned money and little extra for punishment.

Fire them, they are obviously not needed.

Italy the European Thailand:cheesy:

No mistake, I love Italy but I know it very well my ex wife live in extreme south for 20 years, we are still friends, she really has a lot of money so she frequents only the notables and what I saw in the south made me think this country has many commun points with Thailand. What we read in OP  impossible in England Germany France for sure.

I agree. My experiences with businesses in Italy, like finding one the local MD bought but didn't tell the group to having various sets of accounts, to people "missing in action" regularly, all seems similar.

When Italy goes pop, and that's probably gonna happen sooner than most realize. it will make Greece look like nothing.

The attitude their was very much get away with what you can, everywhere and in everything. Only complain if you're caught.
