Michelin Guide to launch in Thailand

Thailand will finally get its much-deserved Michelin Guide by the end of this year, helping confirm its status as a world-class food destination.  

 

The Thai government confirmed that the cabinet has approved a THB143.5 million budget for the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to work with Michelin in a five-year contract to publish the famous food guides, according to a report on TNN.

 

Bangkok will be the first city Michelin will explore for the best restaurants. The project will then expand to other tourist cities, according to Consultant to Commerce Minister Nattaporn Jatusripitak.

Well, may I hereby wish the 'Michelin-men' good luck in their endeavour in the LoS. As, possibly(!?), outside of some long-time, well-established, hotels, resorts, and a small number of restaurants worth the name, the least one can say is that the picture is far from stable, or rather permanently moving in the LoS, for what catering is concerned also... Considering the Michelin guides are once-a-year issues, and that my guess is the average lifetime of most restaurants/eateries in a specific configuration (the one Michelin based itself on for its review!) is well below that timespan. Whether the business has been closed, moved to another location, has different new owners, or, the most frequent one, the 'chef'/cook, more often with the whole kitchen-team, has left to some other place... Go on, eventually(!), for rooms in the hostelry business Bibendum, sparely distributing some 'towers' and commenting on some others, but don't burn yourself up in the food department, IMHO, especially giving some 'star(s)'!

If Michelin keeps the same standards they have in Europe i guess they will be finished fast in BKK and can keep the stars in their pockets.

 

I don't know any restaurant in BKK which can deliver consequent quality, and the waiters never do it perfect like Michelin demands.

I'd tend to agree.   I was a waiter/bartender in a 2 star rated hotel in the States.  The demands to get and keep that rating was ridiculously hard.  Sad to say I don't think I have had the food or service here that would merit any restaurants in Thailand a ranking.  However there may be politics involved so I am sure they will find a couple.

Won't the TAT be surprised when the top 10 list is all Indian food 55555 :)

 

Seriously some of the best Indian food is served up in Bangkok and the Indian staff are excellent.

 

As for Thai food unless my wife is cooking I take a miss, if Michelin would like to share some of the money I'll even dress the kids up as waiters and they'll have some decent Thai food.

Now in Europe many star rated restaurants stopped with trying to get michelin stars, it just gives them too much stress to keep up that standard on a daily basis. Also many chefs commit suicide if they loose their stars.

 

For me personally it's mostly the waiters who ruin my dinner in restaurants. They are so uneducated/dumb it's unbelievable.

There really are very good restaurants in BKK but you just have to find them and be lucky . They are not along the streets though.

Would be fun to see a michelin inspector sitting there when some soidogs go to him or the flower/rolex-vendors.

 

Also i don't think Michelin will lower their standards to give thai restaurants a star, it would completely ruin the whole purpose of their star-ratingsystem.

 

IF a restaurant is able to get a star (or more) it will get very busy i bet, the rich thai will all flog there to try it. Hopefully they also bring their crying babies into the joint to get them suspended from visiting the place. Nothing more annoying than eating a high quality dinner when pee-somchai's babies start crying or running around.

 

I heard there are westernbased hotelschools in Thailand but myself i have never met any waiter who even could speak real proper english. Even asking for a steakknife is always a stressfull happening and many times the waiter pulls a face like i asked something very indecent.

 

 

J'aime at U Sathorn have a very good chance to get a star (http://www.jaime-bangkok.com).

 

There are lots of quality restaurants in Bangkok, but very few of them serve Thai food.

I suspect it will be a very small book.

There are plenty of places deserving of at least one star in Bangkok, such as Sra Bua, L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, Le Normandie.  I rather doubt there's anywhere outside the capital with similar standards.

The restaurant that I enjoy the most is the kinda place where the 13 year old daughter of the owners comes to take my order and then turns and screams at her 10 year old brother to move his lazy ass and get my beer right sharpish.

 

I give them a star every time.

Some Mercedes Benz dealers are happy again...

Maybe this Michelin guide will be different ?  

They will rate the restaurants based on how many rats and cockroaches they can find in the kitchen . If they only find 1 rat it will get the 5 star , 

 

 

 

I'm sure a somtampuuplaraa stall will get four stars. Not.
